Lessons from… The Grand Canyon
March 30, 2010

I took a 400 mile detour on my scheduled drive from Las Vegas to Palm Desert this past week, visiting the Grand Canyon for my first time.  If you haven’t been, I highly recommend it.  Strange thing about it though – driving in, you have no idea how close you’re getting to it until it suddenly appears before you.  It’s amazing to me that something so magnificent – so vast – could be virtually unnoticeable until you’re practically in it.

My fiancee and I hiked 10km in the canyon over the course of 5 hours; descending about 1600 feet all told.  And it pretty much kicked my butt.

If you haven’t been to the desert yet, know this – the sun is dehydrating you at an incredible rate.  I learned that due to the dryness of the area, you actually dry sweat, meaning that the moisture your body is losing is hardly noticeable… until it’s too late.

The combo lesson here is that you can’t always see what’s coming.  The very good (and the potentially very bad) can be right around the next bend, regardless of how things look or feel right now.  The only thing we can do is educate ourselves, prepare as best we can, and then be ready to embrace what comes.
