Mr. Passion

Attended a book tour event for Gary Vaynerchuk’s new book “Crush It:  Why Now is the Time to Cash in on your Passion“.

The event was, in a word – “inspiring.”  … which is precisely why I don’t limit myself to one word.  The event was over the top, mind blowing, invigorating, hilariously-entertaining and highly-educational.  (That feels better)  Not only is Gary an extremely high energy guy (which we know from his videos) and he’s scary-smart on wine, he’s also a brilliant entrepreneur.  And that’s the combo I love and respect – intelligence, passion and guts.  If you ever get the chance to see this guy live – DO SO.

Here are some of my GEM take away comments from Gary’s 45 minute keynote:

By the way, if you don’t know the name “Gary Vaynerchuk” yet, do a quick google search and see what you’ve been missing.  The guy’s a rockstar of the wine world AND social media.  This is THE guy who’s monetizing Twitter.  He’s also an amazing human being.

“Individually, the fact that the internet you can create a conversation about a specific (for zero cost) blows my mind. It is the single biggest opportunity of all time.”

“Zappos won the culture contest. They outcared Amazon.  Bezos had to buy them.”

“Social media is a marathon, not a sprint. Social media is caring for your customer.”

“We are headed towards the ‘thank you economy’. What people don’t recognize is the core principles that are going on. The personal touch is being brought back – real fast.”

And here’s some of his Q & A remarks:

“I know Tim Ferriss well, and that guy works a hell of a lot more than 4 hours a week.”

“Saying sorry is the best part of social media.  Be honest and own it. We are so aware of how imperfect we are, the vast majority of us are not hypocrites. Every good deed is getting noticed that much more.  This game is going to be won on culture.”

“When did caring become non-primary?  I win by doing my best.”

“There is no other Twitter, so they could monetize.  Charging for content is small thinking.”

“Marketing people get way too caught up in what tool. The content is the key. The message is everything.”

“Online is a self policing world – every move you make is documented. The right thing is caring about the customer. It’s scary because it’s slow. Going fast is cheating and people call you on it. There’s no legitimate quick fix.”

“I tend not to worry about things I can’t control. I don’t like that American wine laws are communistic, but I don’t let it get to me.”

“You have to embrace your DNA – do what you do best.  The Internet doesn’t equalize everyone, it allows you to be you and make money doing it.”

And my personal favorite:

“Passion is so important because we’ve gotten really soft. I hear, ‘Oh, it’s the depression!’ I want to say – ‘It’s not the depression!  Do you see people eating out of garbage cans?  All this means is you can’t buy your 60” TV this year, so you’re stuck with your 36.  Shut the fuck up and get to work.’  Passion gives you the drive.

This man  is my new personal hero.

  1. THANK U! 😉 yes its me!

  2. Great coverage! … Gary V is definitely one of those folks worth the price of admission. His recent book tour (and the talks and Q&A that accompanied it) provided many with that chance. If he’s in your town, rearrange your schedule.
