Be vs Do

Interviewed Chris Widener yesterday for 1/2 an hour.  Fascinating man.  As one listener put it, “he’s one of the most genuine people I’ve ever heard speak.”  Which brings me to my point.  In his book The Art of Influence, Chris talks about the value of “being” influencial, versus “doing” influencial things.  The word influence can have a negative connotation in some circles; people equate it to “manipulative”, “devious” or “insincere”.  I completely disagree.

As a society, we’re getting pretty savvy.  We have nearly all developed a “bullshit detector” so that we can pick up on insincerity or half truths.  And even if we somehow miss them, the power of the itnernet insures those people aren’t taking advantage of many, for long.  to be truly influencial, we need to become the kind of person that others would want to be influenced by.   We need to be genuine, passionate, deliberate and acting with a mission.  You can “do” all you want, you’re not going to lead unless you “are” the type of person others want to follow.
