Be a Yes Man

Saw the movie Yes Man tonight. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d highly recommend it. The film itself is fun, sure, but the message behind it is one that we can all stand to be reminded of from time to time.

yesman2008posterFor those who haven’t seen it, Yes Man is about a Carl, (played by Jim Carrey) a loans officer who has suffered a breakup from his newly married wife, and has isolated himself to his apartment watching movies to avoid being hurt again. That is, until he attends a seminar where he is forced to make a commitment to say “YES” to every opportunity that comes his way. While Carrey entertains with his usual over the top antics, the film itself shares the important message that life is meant to be lived.

No one ever wishes they’d taken less chances with their lives; that they’d experienced less. People always wish for more. Yes Man is a reminder that a large portion of what happens to us in our lives is dependent on how we live it. There are limitations to what we should responsibly say yes to, of course.

Having said that, the next time you find yourself saying “no” take a long hard look at the reasons why. Are they legitimate? Or are you simply saying no out of habit or fear?

Maybe it’s time to start being a yes man.
